Exterior Backups on Openings

Exterior Backups on Openings

The Exterior Backup is where the blade backs up before initially plunging into the matboard on the exterior cuts, such as when cutting a rectangle. 

Exterior Cuts cut into the matboard, not the fallout of the opening.

The Exterior Backup Field Controls Where the Blade Backs up Before Plunging into the Matboard on the Exterior Cuts of Non-Oval Openings

Current Opening Bevel Type

Current Opening Bevel Type

Select the desired Cartridge Tab and then the bevel type you want to edit from the Current Bevel Type dropdown control before making adjustments. Select Current Bevel Type-Front of Mat if it is being cut from the front of the mat.

  • Normal Bevel

  • Reverse Bevel

  • Normal Bevel-Front of Mat

  • Reverse Bevel-Front of Mat

Select the Desired Bevel Type From the Bevel Type Dropdown Control

The Exterior Backup is displayed on the Configuration Map and on the associated field as a green arrow.

The Exterior Backup is Displayed as a Green Arrow

Check against the Configuration Map of the Bevel Type you are cutting to determine specifically which cuts are the Exterior Backups.

Exterior Cuts, such as rectangles, cut into the matboard, not the fallout of the opening. 

Compare to the Configuration Map to See Which Corners are the Exterior Backup

Hook in the Corner of the Opening

Hook in the Corner of the Opening

This is viewed from the front of the mat. If the Exterior Backup plunges the blade too late, it makes the exterior backup too short and may cause hooks in the corners.

Exterior Backups for Non-Oval Openings are Cut too Short, Leaving Hooks in the Corners

Increase the Exterior Backup.

The corners will now meet up properly.

Continue by Test Cutting and Adjusting the Exterior Backup of the Opening Until the Corners Are Cut Correctly

When making adjustments, click either the minus or plus button (-/+) at the end of the desired field about five or six times in the direction indicated. Click OK and do a test cut. Check the results of the cut and continue making adjustments until the desired outcome is achieved.

This is viewed from the front of the mat. If the Exterior Backup plunges the blade too soon, it makes the exterior backup too long.

Decrease the Exterior Backup.

The corners will now meet up properly.
