Cardboard Types and Uses by Framers/Conservators

The following are the most common used cardboard/cardstock by Framers and the uses.

The listed types can be cut and creased on the CMC 9000 and above.

Fluted Cardboard – Kraft paper non-archival – basic packaging. This material would use Perforating Tool.

Archival Cardboard – Similar to the above Kraft packaging using only archival 100% alpha cellulose, acid-free, lignin-free and buffered against acid migration, to meet the requirements of conservators. Very common in museums and libraries. B and E flute are most common. Blue- grey color, sometimes with white one side.

B flute – .118” (3mm) – most commonly used for packaging/shipping finished frames.

E flute – .063” (1.2mm) – light packaging and corner protectors. This type of cardboard is used for shipping sheets of matboard, which can be repurposed for mentioned uses.

F flute - .0335” (.85mm) – not very common but can be used for photo frame packaging.

Card Stock, decorative packages, postcard storage and small gifts would use (blue) Debossing cartridge.

Note: Thickness based on standard flute sizes but may vary with cover sheet thickness.
