This lesson shows how to create a V-Groove, Deboss or Pen object to follow closely around a template shape.

If you want to add a V-Groove, Deboss or Pen object and have it follow around a multi-layer template shape, the results aren't always as expected, as displayed here.

This is because the V-Groove/Deboss/Pen is placed using the default parameters which mirror that of the bottom layer, rather than being an offset from the top mat that we're trying to flow around.

You could spend time adjusting the V-Groove, Deboss, or Pen parameters trying to get it to line up properly, but there is an easier way.

Design in FrameShop, Bring into Trace

Place a three layer #314 Camelback Flare template into the FrameShop Design Editor.

Click on the Properties tab.

Make the middle layer Reveal value .5” (1/2"), and the bottom layer Reveal value .25” (1/4"). The middle layer reveal is the distance from the template to place the V-Groove/Deboss/Pen object.

Bring into Trace via the Right-Click Menu or from the Cut Preview Screen.

Explode to Remove Previous Traced Information

Explode the design to remove the previously traced information.

Click Edit > Explode All.

The Camelback is exploded.

Auto Join Segments

We want to automatically join the design so that we can trace it. This will reconnect all of the segments so that they are joined objects again.

Click Edit > Auto Join Segments.

The three layers are now connected as joined objects.

Trace the Design

Additional information on tracing can be found on the Trace the CutArt section. This design has not been altered, so it doesn't need to be Converted to Splines or Tangified.

Click on the Set Bevels tab.

It should already have three layers listed.

Make sure that the top layer is selected in the layers section, which is displayed at the top of the list regardless of the actual layer number.

Click on the middle opening of our design to select it. This will be our top layer opening. Remember, the outer-most opening will be our V-Groove/Deboss/Pen.

Click the 45° Bevel Set button to trace it. It will turn blue.

Click on the outside opening. This will be our V-Groove/Deboss/Pen object.

Click the 45° V-Groove, Deboss, or Pen Set button to trace it as a V-Groove, Deboss or Pen object.

It will turn the color of the selected cartridge.

We now have the opening and the V-Groove/Deboss/Pen traced.

Select the middle layer on the layer list so that we can trace the bottom opening.

Click on the inside opening to select it.

Click the 45° Bevel Set button to trace it. It will turn blue.

Click on the bottom layer in the layer list and click the Remove button since we combined two of our layers onto one layer.

The layer is removed.

The CutArt is traced.

Save

Save the CutArt.

Load the CutArt.

Cut the CutArt.

Optionally, you can also bring the CutArt straight to the Cut Preview from Trace.

The Camelback design is completed.

Comparison

You can see how much we changed the design when you compare it to the original version.
