How to Make a #502: Diamond with Curved Sides Design

  • These instructions will show you how to make a #502: Diamond with Curved Sides by editing it in Trace.

    • These curves can sweep either Inwards or Outwards.

    • These instructions will work with most of the templates.

  • Click New Mat Design on the FrameShop Main Page.

  • Click Cancel on the New Openings Screen.

  • On the Openings Tab, bring the template #502: Diamond template onto the Editor.

  • Click on the Properties Tab to edit it.

  • Enter the desired size for the #502: Diamond opening.

    • We are going to make our Curves .25” so this may reduce our initial size by .25” as noted below.

      • To make the Curve Inwards, the Bottom Layer is the correct size for the Opening.

      • To make the Curve Outwards, the Bottom layer is smaller than the opening size by the Reveal Width.

    • These instructions will show making the Curve Inwards.

  • Adjust the Reveal to be the distance the curves will be made; we chose .25.

  • Right-Click on the opening and select Convert to CutArt.

  • The design is opened in Trace.

  • For this next part, you may need to Zoom in closer to the design.

  • Make sure the correct object is selected before moving it.

  • Click Undo when necessary.

  • Click on the Center Control Point of the Outside Opening and move it until it Snaps to the Center Control Point of the Inside Opening.

  • For the design to Curve Outward, click on the Center Control Point of the Inside Opening and move it until it Snaps to the Center Control Point of the Outside Opening.

  • Do the same for the other four sides.

  • Now that we have Curved our sides, select and Delete the unneeded Diamond.

  • Now we need to Offset the design to create another Layer.

  • Click on the Opening.

  • Enter the desired offset amount in the Offset Reveal field.

  • Click the Left < button to Offset the Opening.

Offset Rules:

Enclosed Objects:

  • The Left < button will offset an enclosed object to the outside.

  • The Right > button will offset an enclosed object to the inside.

Arcs and Curves greater than 180 Degrees use the same rules as closed objects. 

Unenclosed Objects:

For unenclosed objects the arrow buttons depend on the direction of travel of the vector segments, starting from the line’s start point. The Left < button offsets Clockwise and Right > button offsets Counter-Clockwise.

If it doesn’t Offset in the expected direction, click Undo and click the other Offset Direction.

  • The Opening is now Offset to make another Layer.

  • Click on the Set Bevels tab.

  • Click on the Top Layer if it is not already selected.

  • Click on the Outside Opening; it will turn white.

  • Select the desired Bevel Type and click the Set button next to it.

  • The Outside Opening will turn the color of the selected Bevel Type.

    • The Bottom Layer will still display Blue from the original design’s Bevel Type, but we will trace it onto the Bottom Layer so no need to worry about it.

  • Click on the Bottom Layer.

  • Click on the Inside Opening; it will turn white.

  • Select the desired Bevel Type and click the Set button next to it.

  • The Inside Opening will turn the color of the selected Bevel Type.

  • The Bottom Layer is now traced.

  • Save the CutArt.

  • Make sure that it is saving as the CutArt filetype.

  • Load the CutArt into Designer.

  • The Diamond with Curved Sides design is completed.
