The inside of the V-Groove cuts first in a clockwise direction. These are internal cuts, which cut into the V-Groove fallout. The outside of the V-Groove cuts second in a counter-clockwise direction. These are external cuts, which cut into the matboard.

The Backups and Overcuts control where the blade specifically plunges in and retracts from the matboard or fallout when cutting objects. The different bevel types, including whether it is being cut from the front or the back, will determine the direction the head travels as it cuts, and dictate whether the corner is a backup or an overcut.
