Gantry Replacement for the CMC Model 5000

GANTRY removal is far easier with the board removed from the wall and placed flat on a table. Let the upper edge and left edge hang over the table top so the electrical connectors will not be damaged.

Tools Required:

  • Allen Wrenches from your original Wizard tool kit

  • Special 5/32” Allen Wrench (Long Handle)

  • Slot Screwdriver

  • Phillips Screwdriver

Head Removal

Shut down the computer. Remove the plastic HEAD HOOD (small Phillips screws with star washers).

Unplug the HEAD POWER PLUG by gripping the white plug housing firmly (not the flexible cable), and gently rock it back and forth while pulling up at the same time.

Image Added

Disconnect the air supply. Disconnect the AIR LINE by unscrewing the airline connector.

Image Added

Open the HEAD as if you were changing the BLADE. Remove the small Allen screw to the right of the right-hand HINGE, if one is present. Remove the HORIZONTAL BOLT from the right HINGE on the TROLLEY PLATE using the 9/64 Allen Wrench.

Image Added

The TROLLEY PLATE is the flat plate located between the GANTRY arms.

Image Added

Gently slide the HEAD to the right (rocking up and down may help). The HEAD should now slide off the HINGE pins. Place it in a safe position where it won’t be damaged.

Gantry Removal

Make sure that the computer is still OFF. Remove the Wire Carrier Cover from the Wire Carrier at the top of the Gantry by removing the two Phillips screws.

Image Added

There is a small air tube that is connected to a 90 degree elbow that goes through the metal plate of the Wire Carrier. Pull the air hose sideways off this elbow.

Image Added

Looking at the top rail, you will see two Allen Screws that hold the metal plate of the Wire Carrier to the Gantry. Remove both of these screws with the long 5/32” Allen wrench.

Gently pull the metal bracket of the Wire Carrier STRAIGHT OUT and set it aside (it is still attached to the Travelling Cable).

Move the Gantry to the far left edge of the board.

Image Added

Remove the Gantry Blocks from the Cable Grabber Arms. The Cable Grabber Arms and Gantry Blocks are located in the center of the crossbar on the Gantry; one on top and one at the bottom. Each Gantry Block is attached to the Cable Grabber Arm with two long 3/16” Allen Bolts. Remove the two bolts on the upper Cable Grabber Arm. Set the Gantry Support Block aside and remember that the larger one goes on the top. Repeat for the lower grabber arm. The Gantry cannot yet be removed.

Image Added

Remove the Gantry Stop Screw at the lower left corner of the cutting board.

Image Added

Now the Gantry can be fully removed, carefully, while ensuring that the Cable Grabber Arm tabs slip through the side tab slots and that the small air tube does not hang-up on anything.

Gantry Replacement

With one person holding each end of the Gantry, carefully align the two right Gantry wheels with the wheel rails and slide the Gantry on until the left wheels just engage the tracks. Line up the Cable Grabber Arm with the side tab slot.

Image Added

Align the upper Cable Grabber Arm holes to the holes on the larger Gantry Support Block (2” high); Grabber Blocks and Arms should be aligned with the Gantry and with themselves. Screw down securely. Repeat this process with the lower Cable Grabber Arm and Gantry Support Block (1.5” high).

Image Added

Screw the Stop Screw back in place on the left end of the lower rail. Move the Gantry to the left side of the Board until it stops.

Image Added

Slide the Wire Carrier back into place and replace the Allen screws with the long Allen wrench.

Image Added

Reattach the small air tube that is connected to a 90 degree elbow that goes through the metal plate.

Image Added

Replace the Wire Carrier Cover, making sure that the screw goes through the Grounding Wire.

Gantry Wheel Adjustment

Grasp top of the GANTRY rails, one at a time, and pull them in and out to test for looseness. If one or both feel loose, they must be tightened.

Image Added

Top of GANTRY rails have 2 round silver disks held in place with two Phillips screws and one Allen screw. Do NOT touch the Allen screw in the center.

Loosen the two Phillips screws slightly. DO NOT REMOVE THE PHILLIPS SCREWS.

Using your fingers, push upward on the Allen screw. While holding it in place, retighten the Phillips screws.
You may find it easier to place your hand on the top of the board, and hook your thumb underneath the Allen Screw - squeeze your hand and thumb together as you tighten the Phillips screws.

Test again for looseness. If still loose, repeat the procedure. Repeat for the other wheel.
Recheck looseness of the GANTRY WHEELS. Apply equal pressure to disks on each side of GANTRY when adjusting. Do not press too hard on silver disks, as it is possible to bow the board out at the top.

Gantry Alignment

Pull GANTRY to the left side of the BOARD until it stop.

Compare right edge of GANTRY to right edge of VERTICAL CLAMP. They should be even.

A good alignment can be seen with the eye or felt with your finger. THESE TWO SURFACES MUST BE FLUSH WITH EACH OTHER FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. If the GANTRY leans to the left or right of the VERTICAL CLAMP, GANTRY needs straightening.

Look at the top and determine if GANTRY is leaning to the left or right.

Image Added

Locate GANTRY ALIGNMENT SCREWS.

The GANTRY ALIGNMENT SCREWS (two Phillips Screws) are located at the bottom right literal SIDE of the board. The older machines have two knobs instead of two screws.

If your BOARD has knobs, NEVER USE A TOOL (PLIERS) TO TURN the KNOBS!!

Top of GANTRY leaning to LEFT:

Turn Front Alignment Screw CLOCKWISE (one nearest front of board), and turn Back Alignment Screw COUNTERCLOCKWISE EQUAL DISTANCE. Always loosen one screw before tightening the other. After each turn adjustment, push gantry full length of the board several times and recheck Gantry alignment. Repeat as necessary.

Top of GANTRY leaning to RIGHT:

Turn Front Alignment Screw COUNTERCLOCKWISE (one nearest front of board), and Back Alignment Screw CLOCKWISE EQUAL DISTANCE. Always loosen one screw before tightening the other. After each turn adjustment, push gantry full length of the board several times and recheck Gantry alignment. Repeat as necessary.

Head Installation

Gently insert the HEAD onto the bolt located on the left HINGE.

Warning: Take care when handling the HEAD, as the BLADE is sharp. Note the position of the BLADE for future reference.

Image Added

Holding the HEAD carefully in place, align the hole on the right side of the HEAD to the hole located on the right HINGE.

Image Added

Tighten the HORIZONTAL BOLT into place using the 9/64 Allen Wrench. The connection will be tight, so take care not to strip the screw. After you have tightened the screw, back it off 1/8th of a turn.

Warning: Do not overtighten the HORIZONTAL BOLT, or the HEAD will not rotate into the closed position.

Image Added

Connect the HEAD POWER PLUG in the same manner as you disconnected it.

Image Added

Connect the AIR LINE in the same manner as you disconnected it. Reattach the plastic HEAD HOOD.

You are finished!
